Brief Biography

Dr. Rae Yeung is presently Professor of Paediatrics, Immunology and Medical Science at the University of Toronto, and a Senior Scientist in Cell Biology Research at The Hospital For Sick Children (SickKids). She attended the University of Toronto where she obtained her Medical Degree. Subsequently, she trained in Paediatrics and was Chief Resident at SickKids prior to completing her PhD in Immunology at the Ontario Cancer Institute under the supervision of Dr. Tak Mac. Following her PhD studies, Dr. Yeung returned to clinical training and trained in Paediatric Rheumatology at  SickKids and subsequently came on staff in 1999.  

The goal of Dr. Yeung’s research is to understand the mechanisms governing autoimmunity, specifically the mechanisms involved in initiating and sustaining the immune response in Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases. Dr. Yeung uses Kawasaki disease as an experimental model for studying Autoimmunity. Basic science findings have been translated into clinical correlates, which in turn are leading to new therapeutic interventions to improve the outcome in children affected with Kawasaki Disease. Lessons learned in immunobiology have been applied to studies in Childhood Arthritis, where Dr. Yeung is leading both national and international efforts to understand the biologic basis for heterogeneity in Childhood Arthritis.

Dr. Yeung is currently Chair and Principal Investigator of (UCAN) Understanding Childhood Arthritis Network and Chair of the Scientific Committee of the International Kawasaki Disease Genetics Consortium, in addition Dr. Yeung was the founding Chair of (CAPRI) Canadian Alliance of Paediatric Rheumatology Investigators.

Dr Yeung’s research is supported by The Arthritis Society, the Canadian Arthritis Network (CAN), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSF), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation, Province of Ontario and the Arthritis and Autoimmunity Research Centre. Currently, Dr. Yeung holds an Investigator Award from the Arthritis Society of Canada. Dr. Yeung is the recipient of the American College of Rheumatology Henry Kunkel Young Investigator Award (2009) and the Canadian Rheumatology Association Young Investigator Award (2004).

Research Activities

The central theme of Dr. Yeung’s research program is to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing autoimmunity towards discovery of molecular tools for improved disease diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and prevention. Specifically, studying the mechanisms responsible for initiating and sustaining the immune response in autoimmunity.

Kawasaki Disease (KD):  KD is the most common cause of multi-system vasculitis in childhood. The vessels most commonly damaged are the coronary arteries, making KD the number one cause of acquired heart disease in children from the industrialized world. Dr. Yeung uses KD as an experimental model for studying autoimmunity and has applied her findings to study Childhood Arthritis. Exposure to an environmental agent in a genetically susceptible host is common to systemic autoimmune diseases, making KD a prototypic disease model. She studies the molecular mechanisms responsible for inflammation and vessel breakdown and is also actively involved in clinical care of affected children.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA):  To foster research, improve efficiencies and combine resources to study rare diseases, Dr. Yeung helped develop a national research network (CAPRI-Canadian Alliance of Paediatric Rheumatology Investigators), and served as the inaugural Chair, helping to lead four Canada-wide, multi-disciplinary group grants to study childhood arthritis, continuing my thematic studies on immune activation in childhood autoimmunity.  Developing a robust national research infra-structure to support translational research including: a standardized data collection system for clinical phenotyping, processing and storage of biologic specimens, communications website, partnership funding for trainee support, and a strong organizational structure to develop guidelines, monitor research and tackle issues related to science, education, publication and knowledge translation and exchange. Dr. Yeung’s laboratory currently houses the national tissue repository.

Developing platforms and tools to improve research efficiency and magnify impact:  One of the largest obstacles to international collaboration is uniformity of data collection, analysis and assay performance. Site of sample collection is one of the most important factors responsible for differences in multi-center biomarker studies, likely due to differences in biologic data handling. The need for standardized operating procedures and core resources for analysis are critical first steps to ensure high quality translational research. Dr. Yeung established an international research consortium to address this challenge.  Together, representing over 50 countries and 300 sites, to jointly endorse the UCAN (Understanding Childhood Arthritis Network) initiative. UCAN’s goal is to discover novel genetic, biologic and phenotypic markers to define Childhood Arthritis in the broadest sense.
