“Have a Heart for SickKids” Radiothon raises a world record-setting $3.2 million

TORONTO – The community showed its overwhelming support for Sick Kids by donating a record amount of $3,218,656 during the “Have a Heart for Sick Kids Radiothon” broadcast on sister stations Newstalk 1010 CFRB, 97.3 EZ Rock and Mix 99.9 of Standard Radio, presented by Foresters.

“The listeners of CFRB, Mix 99.9 and EZ Rock heard the compelling and emotional stories of Sick Kids told by our patients, families and staff,” says Michael O'Mahoney, President of Sick Kids Foundation. “With the help of Gary Slaight and Standard Radio, the people of Toronto were able to show not only their generous support but their dedication to Sick Kids.”

The money raised through the Radiothon will go to the highest priority needs at Sick Kids hospital and research institute.

“It means so much to us that the community has shown its tremendous support of Sick Kids,” said O'Mahoney. “Although this is a record amount it is still just a small portion of the money we need to raise each year to ensure that Sick Kids is able to continue to operate as a world leader in child health.”

The Hospital for Sick Children (affectionately known as Sick Kids) is consistently rated as one of the top four paediatric health sciences centres worldwide. Scientific discoveries at Sick Kids have transformed the lives of children everywhere, and include the invention of Pablum in 1930, the surgical repair of the congenital heart defect in “blue babies” in 1963, the discovery of the defective gene which is responsible for cystic fibrosis in 1989, and the recent mapping of chromosome 7, making it the most comprehensive description of any human chromosome.
