Malkin to receive Men of Distinction award

Toronto – Dr. David Malkin, associate chief of research (clinical), senior staff oncologist, senior scientist, and co-director of the Cancer Genetics Program at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and professor of paediatrics at the University of Toronto has been selected as a recipient of the 2008 Men of Distinction Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF). This annual award is given in recognition of excellence and outstanding humanitarian achievement. Recipients are selected by a tribute committee based on their ongoing commitments to the wellbeing of the community.

“David Malkin has distinguished himself as an exemplary clinical oncologist, a renowned teacher, a strong patient advocate, and an outstanding researcher of the genetic origins of cancer,” says Dr. Janet Rossant, chief of research at SickKids. “This award is a fitting recognition of the leadership and commitment that David has personified in his life’s work.”

Malkin will be honoured at a special luncheon on September 24, 2008 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto.

“I have always considered David a physician of distinction not only within our institution, but also nationally and internationally” says Dr. Denis Daneman, chief of paediatrics at SickKids. “It is wonderful to see David’s contributions recognized in such a prestigious manner by an organization such as the ICRF.”

The ICRF is a major fundraising organization whose goal is to provide research funding for qualified cancer researchers in Israel by a rigorous scientific peer review process. Since 1975, the ICRF has provided millions of research dollars that have resulted in countless, high-impact scientific achievements and breakthroughs in Israel.
