Prime Minister presents awards to nurses

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Health Minister Tony Clement recognized 14 nurse leaders from across Canada on Friday February 1 at a Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) centennial signature event, held at SickKids.

The recipients included Mary Jo Haddad, SickKids president and CEO, who was presented a CNA Nurse to Know Centennial Achievement Award for her outstanding leadership and achievement as a registered nurse by Prime Minister Harper and Dr. Marlene Smadu, president of the CNA.

Prime Minister Harper and Health Minister Clement met with SickKids nurses prior to the awards ceremony. Tessie Koonthanam, RN, 4D Ward – Cardiac, and Lori Palozzi, clinical nurse specialist/NP, Anaesthesia, had the opportunity to chat with them and have their photos taken.

“There are 270,000 registered nurses in Canada today,” said Prime Minister Harper. “These vital individuals are fulfilling roles, not only on the front line of health care, but also in research, advocacy, innovation, health policy development and education.”

The other recipients of the achievement award, representing each province and territory, were: Joanne Simms of Newfoundland; Patsy Smith of Nova Scotia; Deborah Roberts of Prince Edward Island; Daniel Savoie of New Brunswick; Lieutenant Jeff Lee of Quebec; Nancy DiPietro of Ontario; Dr. Roberta Woodgate of Manitoba; Dr. June Anonson of Saskatchewan; Marianne Stewart of Alberta; Dion Thevarge of British Columbia; Patricia McLellan of the Yukon, Celine Pelletier of the Northwest Territories; and Barb Harvey of Nunavut.
