Sherman appointed CIHR Scientific Director

Toronto – SickKids Senior Scientist and Staff Grastroenterologist Dr. Philip Sherman has been appointed incoming Scientific Director of the Canadian Institute's of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (CIHR-INMD) . The appointment announced today by CIHR President Dr. Alain Beaudet and CIHR Governing Council is effective January 1, 2009.

Dr. Sherman, the second SickKids scientist to be named a Scientific Director for CIHR, will be responsible for championing excellence in health research, establishing and nurturing vital partnerships with government, health charities and the private sector, and fostering effective communication and knowledge dissemination. The I NMD , one of 13 virtual institutes of CIHR, supports health research addressing the biological and environmental causes and impacts of a wide range of conditions and problems associated with hormone, digestive system, kidney and liver function. Sherman 's own research focuses on disease-causing grastrointestinal bacteria and on probiotics.

“This is a well-deserved acknowledgment of Dr. Sherman's leadership and his comprehensive research background,” says Dr. Janet Rossant, Chief of Research at SickKids. “His collaborative approach and his work to improve the overall health and quality of life of Canadians make him an excellent choice to lead this important institute.”

The recipient of many awards, Dr. Sherman is also professor of Paediatrics, Microbiology & Dentistry at the University of Toronto and Canada Research Chair in Gastrointestinal Disease. He completed his medical degree at the University of Calgary , and is a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Fellow of the American Academy of Paediatrics. The author of some 200 articles published in prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Sherman has also edited three textbooks and authored multiple book chapters.
