SickKids’ health information website, AboutKidsHealth.ca becomes a national source for child health information

TORONTO – AboutKidsHealth.ca, a child health information website created by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), is providing resources to centres across Canada to ensure that Canadian parents have easy access to reliable child health information. Through partnerships with Sympatico / MSN, IWK Health Centre and other hospitals, child health news from AboutKidsHealth.ca will reach more Canadian families than ever before.

AboutKidsHealth.ca information can now be found in the Health and Fitness section on Sympatico / MSN, Canada 's most popular internet destination. The site, called “Children's Health” features articles from the AboutKidsHealth “e-Zine”, a collection of features on issues affecting children's health, based on current research. They include topics such as childhood obesity, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cyber bullying, and the benefits of family meals.

AboutKidsHealth.ca has also recently partnered with the IWK Health Centre to provide information to families and patients in the Maritime Provinces. The IWK website now includes in-depth interactive information from AboutKidsHealth.ca on ADHD, brain tumours, diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, premature babies, pregnancy and infancy, and pain. Resources for families in the Maritimes who are dealing with these conditions are provided. An animated, interactive tool about the human body called How the Body Works is also available.

AboutKidsHealth.ca is discussing similar collaborations with other paediatric centres in Canada to create a standardized, reliable library of child health information for families nationwide.

“The opportunity for AboutKidsHealth.ca to provide child health information through Sympatico / MSN and the IWK's website will help achieve our goal of enhancing health outcomes and quality of life for children and families across Canada ,” says Dr. Ross Hetherington, director of AboutKidsHealth.ca. “SickKids is taking the first step toward creating a national collaboration among paediatric health centres in creation to disseminate a comprehensive collection of evidence based, accessible child health information.”

Since the launch of AboutKidsHealth.ca in 2004, the website has steadily gained more recognition both nationally and globally. In the last two years, traffic to the site has doubled to more than 100,000 visits per month in 2008. In the last 12 months, over 1,000,000 visits have come to AboutKidsHealth.ca from 995 cities in Canada and 217 countries worldwide.

One of the most popular features of AboutKidsHealth.ca is Health A-Z, an encyclopedia of health topics that parents can browse alphabetically or by topic for articles on various aspects of child life such as common health conditions, medications, wellness, safety, nutrition, school, and relationships.

Some of the other features found on AboutKidsHealth.ca include:

•  Resource Centres – Eight extensive centres focusing on health concerns and complex conditions including pregnancy and babies, premature babies, ADHD, brain tumours, diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions, and pain. They serve as comprehensive, interactive online textbooks to answer the questions and concerns of families. Watch for asthma and learning disabilities resource centres early in 2009, and a major addition to the ADHD centre.

•  How the Body Works – Unique in the online world, this animated, interactive tool illustrates the anatomy and physiology of major organ systems. It explains functions of the body and complex processes such as genetics and sexual development. It is a valuable teaching tool for educators and professionals around the world.

•  Just For Kids – This section, with more than 200 minutes of narrated animation and other graphical resources, teaches children and youth about disease management, their bodies, and everyday health practices.
