SickKids switches off for Earth Hour

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is shrinking its carbon footprint down to baby size. On March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., SickKids will be joining more than 1,600 cities and towns across 80 countries in turning off its lights to raise awareness about climate change.

Last year, the hospital’s exterior lights on Elizabeth Street and corridors facing Elizabeth Street on all floors were turned off. This year, under the leadership of SickKids’ Energy Management Team, the hospital will turn off even more lights, including all window lights in the seating area of the cafeteria, the exterior lights on University Avenue, the SickKids sign and driveway lights, more lights in hallways in the Atrium and the fountain lights in the Atrium. SickKids is encouraging staff to shut off all lights where possible (safety first, of course!).

All the activity at a major hospital like SickKids requires a lot of energy. With its main campus at University Avenue and space in satellite buildings in the downtown core, SickKids takes up more than an entire city block. That’s why SickKids is taking steps to reduce its energy consumption.

Earth Hour is just one of the ways the hospital is showing its support for a greener Toronto. Our latest initiative is the installation of an award-winning solar-powered hot water heating system on the roof. Other energy-saving initiatives include installing real-time monitoring devices for water, electricity and steam consumption, scheduling fans to turn off when rooms are unoccupied, balancing building pressure to prevent cold air from entering when doors are open in the Atrium and lowering the winter room temperature one degree Celsius and increasing the summer room temperature three degrees Celsius.

Reducing our carbon footprint is just one small part of the SickKids vision: Healthier Children. A Better World.
