Barrera honoured with a POGO Recognition Award

By Charlene Fong

Dr. Maru Barrera, Psychologist, Haematology/Oncology Division, Senior Associate Scientist, Child Health Evaluative Sciences and Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, was recently awarded the 2010 Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) Companion Award. Barrera was presented with the honour at the annual Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario Symposium dinner on Nov. 19, 2010.

“I am honoured to have received this recognition,” says Dr. Barrera. “I would like to thank my colleagues and POGO for their continued support over the years. It is exciting to be a part of many of POGO’s initiatives in advancing childhood cancer control and improving the quality of life and psychosocial outcomes of the afflicted children, adolescents and their families.”

The POGO Companion Award is one of three awards under POGO’s Recognition Program. The Companion Award acknowledges the ongoing contributions of an individual who has promoted behavioural inquiry within and beyond Ontario in advancing and enriching childhood cancer care and control. The award celebrates the enthusiasm, passion and collegiality that Barrera has brought to the table when working with colleagues in POGO initiatives. Barrera’s work has enriched the planning and implementation of Ontario’s paediatric cancer system and its delivery of care for children and their families.

Barrera has been a Psychologist within the field of paediatric cancer for over 10 years. Her research interests and activities are focused on the impact of paediatric cancer on a child and family’s physiological, social and quality of life indicators.
