SickKids celebrates UN International Year of Youth

The United Nations (UN) has declared 2010 the International Year of Youth (IYY). The year-long celebration begins today. This year’s theme, Dialogue and mutual understanding, aims to encourage an exchange of thoughts and ideas across generations, while promoting ideals of peace, respect for human rights and freedoms and solidarity.

The goal of IYY is to recognize and advance the participation of youth in all aspects of society. The UN will focus on three areas: create awareness (increase commitment and investment in youth); mobilize and engage (increase youth participation and partnerships); and connect and build bridges (increase intercultural understanding among youth).

This year's theme will help facilitate the attainment of the UN's Millennium Development Goals, which seeks to improve social ills such as poverty, hunger, access to health care and education by 2015.

At SickKids, youth play an important role in serving as advocates for child health through the Children’s Council. The council works to improve the health of both children and families by providing leadership and guidance for family-centred care initiatives. In addition, the council has provided youth with a voice and the leadership tools to advocate for change.

The UN has posed a question to the world’s youth: What innovative activities have you participated in for social causes? Children are encouraged to post answers on the IYY Facebook page. The deadline for submission is August 15.
