Katie Armstrong – Be a role model!

Katie Armstrong, a SickKids Ambassador, is used to sharing her story with the local community, but now she is hoping to inspire tweens and teens across North America.

Katie, 12, is a fundraiser, a soccer and hockey player, and a writer. She is also a cardiology patient at SickKids, but you’d never know it judging from her busy life. And it may get even busier! Katie has been selected as a finalist for Discovery Girl magazine’s “Be a Role Model” contest. Discovery Girl is a teen magazine of which Katie is a big fan. She has asked that we tell everyone at SickKids about the contest, as she needs your online votes. Out of 30 finalists, 10 will be flown to California and featured in the teen magazine. Katie would really appreciate your votes!

When Katie was five, she was diagnosed with arrythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD), a rare and life-threatening heart condition. Thanks to daily medications and frequent check-ups at SickKids, Katie is able to lead a fairly normal life. Katie’s excellent care at SickKids has inspired her to give back to the SickKids community.

Katie has volunteered and fundraised extensively for SickKids over the past three years. She has been a SickKids ambassador, a member of the SickKids Children’s Council and a Change Crusader. To date, she has helped raise nearly $20,000 for the hospital!
