Rutka named President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons

At the recent Annual Meeting of American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), The Hospital for Sick Children’s (SickKids) own Dr. James Rutka, a Neurosurgeon and Co-director & Principal Investigator at The Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre as well as a Senior Scientist in Cell Biology, was named President of the organization.

Rutka received his medical degree from Queen’s University Medical School in 1981, followed by residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. He undertook basic science research studies in experimental neuro-oncology at the Brain Tumor Research Center at the University of California at San Francisco where he also received his PhD in Experimental Pathology from 1984 to 1987. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1989 and pursued clinical and research fellowships in Nagoya and Tokyo Japan 1990.

His primary research and clinical interests relate to the treatment of paediatric brain tumors, as well as the surgical treatment of epilepsy in children. Rutka was a driving force behind the formation of the Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre, and B.r.a.i.n.child, a support group for families whose children are undergoing treatments for brain tumours.

A prolific author, Rutka has published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, and over 50 book chapters. He has presented at more than 300 meetings and conferences worldwide.
