Governor General visits SickKids

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Her Excellency Mrs. Sharon Johnston came to Toronto May 24 to recognize excellence in philanthropy and volunteerism. This included a visit to The Hospital for Sick Children.

The Governor General's visit began with a visit to the SickKids Research & Learning Tower construction site. His Excellency was accompanied by Mary Jo Haddad, President and CEO of SickKids, and Ted Garrard, President of SickKids Foundation.  Her Excellency met with members of the SickKids Cystic Fibrosis Centre and toured the lab of Dr. Christine Bear. With a master’s degree that focuses on cystic fibrosis, Her Excellency took a keen interest in the research at SickKids Research Institute.

On his Twitter account the Governor General said, “Let’s thank supporters of @SickKids. Innovation and research is key to improving health care for children.”

Following the tour of The Research & Learning Tower, the Governor General dropped by The Reading Room where he read to young patients. It was a familiar role – he has eight grandchildren of his own and enjoys reading to them. Indeed, he is so fond of this role that he is known affectionately to some of his grandchildren as “Grandpa Book.”

His Excellency concluded his visit by speaking at the SickKids Foundation Donor Hall Celebration, underscoring the importance of the spirit of philanthropy and active volunteerism – important pillars in his mandate as Governor General.

It was an outstanding evening, for the SickKids patients participating in The Reading Room session as well as the many donors and volunteers, whose contributions were acknowledged in style.
