SickKids Foundation wins gold at CMA Awards

SickKids Foundation has won its first ever gold award from the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA), presented at the 42nd annual CMA Awards Gala in Toronto Nov. 30. The Foundation won the top honour in the Integrated Not-for-Profit campaign category for its Healthy & Happy campaign held in May to promote children’s health.

Healthy & Happy is a SickKids effort to build awareness of pressing children’s health issues and the need for community support to further research and patient care. The campaign is built on one premise – every child deserves to be healthy and happy. Throughout May, SickKids asked the people of Toronto and beyond to participate, donate and share – Do The Happy – in support of the Healthy & Happy campaign.

“We are delighted to receive this kind of acknowledgment for our innovative Healthy & Happy program,” says Ted Garrard, President and CEO, SickKids Foundation. “We wanted to get the attention of all Torontonians focused on the health issues facing children in the month of May by asking a single question: Doesn’t every child deserve to be healthy and happy?”

The inaugural Healthy & Happy campaign was focused on raising awareness of current child health issues in Canada including: healthy weights and healthy starts in childhood development; prevention, symptoms and treatment of traumatic brain injury; and the potential of stem cell research to lead to further discoveries for treating childhood diseases and conditions.

Results of the campaign included a 5.6 per cent increase in revenue for the month of May, an increase in online donors, the acquisition of new corporate partners, and the generation of 60 new third-party fundraising events and 600 new monthly donors. More than 400 people joined SickKids to “Do the Happy” at the launch event held May 1, 2012 at Nathan Phillips Square by linking hands and forming Toronto’s largest happy face.

“This is the first Canadian Marketing Association award for us and what a thrill to win the top honour,” Lori Abbott, Director of Marketing, SickKids Foundation. “We are doing the happy all over again and the momentum is building as we look forward to our second annual campaign next May.”

Earlier this year, the Healthy & Happy campaign also received recognition for the Do the Happy logo and print campaign creative in the 2012 Coupe International Design and Image Competition Awards and from the Social Good Design Awards, organized by the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario.

The Healthy & Happy campaign was created by Oxygen Design Agency. Digital was handled by Jet Cooper.

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) also won gold for the 2012 CMA Best of the Best Award, the top honour overall, for its “Pain Squad” campaign featuring a mobile app created to help develop better pain management programs for children suffering from cancer. The app and campaign were developed by Cundari.

The CMA Awards Gala is the largest marketing awards event in Canada. A full list of CMA Award winners can be found on the CMA website.
