SickKids once again named one of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals

SickKids rose from third to second place in the 2012 Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals list released October 24, 2012 by Research Infosource Inc.

“We are pleased to receive this recognition, which reinforces our commitment to advancing the health of Canadian children through scientific discovery and innovation,” says SickKids President and CEO Mary Jo Haddad, “As the largest paediatric academic health sciences centre in Canada, SickKids is so much more than a hospital. We are driven, every day, by a mission to improve the health of children by providing the best in family-centred care, creating groundbreaking scientific and clinical advancements and training the next generation of experts in child health.”

The list is based on several factors, including research income. According to the analysis by Research Infosource Inc. the total research income for Canada's Top 40 research hospitals was $2.195 billion in Fiscal 2011, a 0.7 per cent increase from the 2010 fiscal results. SickKids reported a research income of more than $167 million for fiscal 2011, placing second overall. Only nine hospitals on this list, one of which is SickKids, reported a research income of greater than $100 million.

“We may not be the biggest hospital on this list, but we demonstrate our impact with high-quality care and world class research, resulting in a consistent top three ranking on this list,” says SickKids Chief of Research Dr. Janet Rossant, “It is through our strategic vision, our focus on high-impact research and an unprecedented spirit of collaboration within our walls and around the globe that give us the edge to achieve this level of excellence, all with the ultimate goal of improving child health outcomes.”
