Building excitement

media in front of tower

It’s an exciting time at SickKids – on September 17, 2013 we will be officially opening the new Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning.

Anticipation is building – the signs are everywhere. In fact our signs are currently being installed on the façade of the building and soon our name will take its place as part of the Toronto skyline! And the media is picking up on our energy! SickKids is sweeping the headlines with news about the opening. Read about the coverage we received in National Post, Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Maclean’s, Global TV, CTV, CityNews and CBC, Inside Toronto, Yahoo News and more.

The Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning will bring together researchers from different scientific disciplines and a variety of clinical perspectives, to accelerate discoveries, new knowledge and their application to child health — a different concept from traditional research building designs. The facility will physically connect SickKids science, discovery and learning activities to its clinical operations.

Designed by award-winning Diamond + Schmitt Architects Inc. and HDR Inc. with a goal to achieve LEED® Gold Certification for sustainable design, the Gilgan Centre will create an architectural landmark as the eastern gateway to Toronto’s Discovery District. The centre is funded by a grant from the Government of Canada, through the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Government of Ontario, philanthropist Peter Gilgan and community support for the ongoing fundraising campaign.
