By Sydney Clark
Dr. Astrid Guttmann has been appointed to a Research Chair in Reproductive and Child Health Services and Policy Research by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Guttmann is a Staff Physician and Project Investigator at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
“This award will enable me to evaluate current health system reform strategies that deal with improving access to and coordination of services for Ontario’s children and youth who have chronic and mental health conditions,” says Guttmann, who is also an Associate Professor of Paediatrics and Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at University of Toronto and is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluation Sciences. “With this research I hope to be able to improve children’s health outcomes.”
Guttmann plans to take her evaluation beyond Ontario to collaborate and do comparative work with researchers in other provinces, testing differences in policy implementation and improving the administrative data available for such evaluations. She looks forward to training additional child health services and policy researchers so that she can build a national research network focused on improving the health of youth and children.
Dr. Guttmann’s chair is one of six new Research Chairs in Reproductive and Child Health Services and Policy Research. The Chairs will work closely with decision-makers to ensure that policy research in reproductive, child, and youth health services is for the benefit of patients and their families and to improve the overall health care system.
