Dr. Meredith Irwin honoured by Israel Cancer Research Fund

By Greg Mackiewicz

Dr. Meredith Irwin, Staff Oncologist in Haematology/Oncology and Senior Scientist in Cell Biology at SickKids Research Institute is being recognized by Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) with the Women of Action Award.

The award will be presented to Irwin on April 9 at the ICRF Women of Action Luncheon.

Irwin’s studies are aimed at understanding how genes belonging to the p53-family are involved in pathways that lead to the development of cancer, and how these genes determine the sensitivity of cancer cells to therapies. A primary interest of Irwin is to identify novel treatments for paediatric cancers including neuroblastoma, which is the most common cause of cancer-related mortality in children.

Irwin also holds the position of Canada Research Chair, Cancer Biology, and has been the Associate Chair of Paediatrics (Research) since 2008.

Israel Cancer Research Fund’s Women of Action Award honours outstanding women for their contributions to society and achievements in advocacy, business, health sciences and philanthropy.
