Ronald McDonald House Toronto and SickKids partner on a historic first for a Toronto hospital

An agreement has been reached between Ronald McDonald House Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) to open the first Ronald McDonald House Toronto Family Room inside the world-renowned paediatric hospital in downtown Toronto.

The largest of its kind in Ontario, the Ronald McDonald House Toronto Family Room at SickKids will provide parents and family members of children who are seriously ill with a medical-free space to rest, relax and recharge inside the hospital, while being mere steps from their child’s bedside.

“The growth of the Family Room Program across the Greater Toronto Area speaks to the increased need for this type of unique service for families rife with stress and worry over their child’s serious medical diagnosis,” says Jane Marco, Chief Executive Officer, Ronald McDonald House Toronto. “Being able to offer families a place of comfort and respite within the walls of a hospital like SickKids further underscores the critical importance of family-centred care in the healing process.”

“Starting next year, our partnership with Ronald McDonald House Toronto will allow us to offer this respite space within the hospital to many parents who could use a break but don’t require ongoing accommodation,” says Mary Jo Haddad, CEO and President of SickKids. “It’s a wonderful initiative that will make a difference for families when they need it the most.”

Slated to open in 2014, the Family Room at SickKids will be the first of its kind in Canada to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It joins the Credit Valley Hospital of the Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga and Markham Stouffville Hospital, as the third healthcare centre in the GTA to house a Family Room.

The Ronald McDonald House Toronto Family Room Program which launched in 2012 extends the comforting and supportive experience of Ronald McDonald House Toronto to the hospital setting.

An independently owned and operated charity, Ronald McDonald House Toronto is responsible for staffing, funding, furnishing and operating its Family Room Program.
