Robert Harding, Chair of SickKids Board, named to Order of Canada

Robert J. Harding, Chair of the Board of Trustees for The Hospital for Sick Children, has been named as a Member of the Order of Canada for his accomplishments as a business leader and for his extensive community engagement.

The announcement was made in Ottawa on Dec. 30 by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

“Robert Harding is a tremendous community leader in the arts, United Way, education and most importantly SickKids,” said Mary Jo Haddad, President and CEO. “He gives generously of his time, talents and philanthropy, and by working through others he has impact in truly remarkable ways. He’s an impressive Canadian!”

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Harding is Director, Past Chair of Brookfield Asset Management Inc.’s Global Infrastructure Advisory Board, and has served Brookfield and its predecessor companies since 1984 in various executive positions. He is also Chair of the Board of Governors at the University of Waterloo, Trustee at the Art Gallery of Ontario, past Chair and Board member of the United Way Toronto, Director and Chairman of Norbord Inc., Director and Chair of NexJ Systems Inc. and a director of Manulife Financial Corporation.

He joined the SickKids Board of Trustees in 2005 and was elected Chair in June 2011.

Peter Gilgan, a dedicated supporter of SickKids for whom the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning is named, was also named a Member of the Order of Canada. He was cited for his innovative leadership in Canada’s construction industry and for his philanthropic support of initiatives in health care, education and athletics.

In March 2012, he announced the largest gift to a paediatric hospital in Canadian history with his $40-million donation to SickKids.

The Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
