SickKids once again a Top 40 research hospital

By Margaret Sheridan

For the third consecutive year The Hospital for Sick Children has landed in the top three of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals released Oct. 29 by Re$earch Infosource Inc.

The list uses data including research income, number of researchers and research intensity to rank the top 40 research hospitals in the country. Research intensity is determined by dividing the research income by the number of researchers employed by the organization. For SickKids, which employs 552 researchers and has a research income of $171,163,000, the intensity score amounts to $310,100 in funding per researcher.

SickKids, which was ranked second in 2011, saw its research intensity score dip slightly (about $1,000) despite earning two per cent more in research income in 2012, a change that can be attributed directly to an increase in the number of researchers working for the hospital.

Rounding out the top three is Toronto’s University Health Network, which took top spot, and Montreal’s McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), which ranked second.
