SickKids research in rare diseases to be presented at BIO International Convention 2013

Two SickKids researchers will be among the presenters at this year’s BIO International Convention in Chicago taking place later this month. Dr. Peter Dirks and Dr. Don Mahuran will present at the Rare Disease Partnering Summit, part of BIO. SickKids is the only Canadian organization to be participating in the Summit along with Boston Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Chicago.

The BIO International Convention is a premier biotechnology convention, bringing together key players in the biotechnology industry from policy makers to CEOs to scientists. The Rare Disease Partnering Summit will highlight both laboratory and clinical research projects and initiatives that address orphan diseases. Individual investigators from the partnering institutions will discuss their research in the areas of medulloblastoma, neuroblastoma, lysosomal storage diseases, Ewings sarcoma and muscular dystrophy.

Dr. Peter Dirks’ talk is entitled Dissecting brain tumour heterogeneity: Implications for Novel Therapies. Dirks, a leader in the field of brain tumour research, will highlight his work and focus on the potential for more personalized treatment of brain cancers.

Dr. Don Mahuran,  has developed novel compounds that could be potential therapeutics for lysosomal storage diseases. He will discuss his work in this area in his talk Small Molecule Therapy for Lysosomal Storage Diseases.

The Rare Disease Partnering Summit on April 24 will be followed by a reception sponsored by Shire. This Summit is designed to facilitate collaboration with industry and further advance research in rare and orphan diseases.
