A Night to Remember: Music legend to attend gala showcasing SickKids International work in Greece

SickKids’ impressive work overseas will be highlighted during a fundraising gala entitled A Night to Remember, which will feature a performance from Greek music legend Nana Mouskouri.

The gala will be held 23 October at the Paramount Conference and Event Venue (222 Rowntree Dairy Road in Woodbridge), commencing at 6:30 PM with cocktails followed by dinner at 7:30 PM, and culminate in an intimate performance by Nana Mourskouri.  The gala is in support of an exciting new initiative being undertaken by SickKids to support the enhancement of paediatric oncology clinical care in Athens, Greece.  Tickets may be purchased by calling 905.326.0650.

Since 2012, SickKids International (SKI) has been working on developing a strong relationship with Aghia Sofia Children’s Hospital in Athens.  More specifically, SKI is focused on helping Aghia Sophia in establishing its Children’s Oncology Department as a regional centre of excellence.  Through the proposed collaboration, SickKids will support Aghia Sofia in its objectives via the provision of education, training, and clinical care guidance.

The gala will occur during the 46th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), being held in Toronto from October 22-25.  The vision of SIOP is both simple and powerful: that no child should die from cancer.  In line with that vision, the partnership between SickKids and Aghia Sofia has great potential to help hundreds of children in Greece and the Balkans who are suffering from childhood cancers.

“Together, we are making a positive difference in bringing hope, joy and health into the lives of these children, their families and their communities,” says Raymond King, SKI’s Director of Business Development. “Through our efforts in supporting this amazing relationship with Aghia Sofia, we are living the SickKids’ vision of Healthier Children.  A Better World”.

SickKids is extremely pleased and honoured that the legendary Nana Mouskouri has agreed to return to Toronto to support and perform at this gala event.   Over a career stretching almost 60 years, Mouskouri has sold over 300 million albums, and has also been involved as a UNICEF ambassador since 1993.  While in Toronto for the gala, she will also be visiting SickKids to meet with clinical leaders and observe the hospital’s haematology/oncology unit.

Other potential gala attendees include: Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and President of ELPIDA Friends of Children with Cancer, after whom the Children’s Oncology Department is named;   Manolis Papasavas, CEO of Aghia Sophia; Robert Peck, Ambassador of Canada to Greece; and Alexandros Loannides, incoming Consul General of Greece to Toronto.

All funds raised from the gala will be held in a restricted account overseen by the SickKids Foundation. Funds will be used to support training, education and clinical mentorship programs for Children’s Oncology Hospital nursing, pharmacology and physician staff at SickKids.

In addition to raising funds to support this important initiative, the gala will also endeavor to bring awareness to the Greek-Canadian community of this collaboration, and what it means for paediatric oncology.
