Germany’s Daniela Schadt visits SickKids

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) was delighted to host Ms. Daniela Schadt, the domestic partner of German President Joachim Gauck on Friday, Sept. 26. Schadt visited the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning where she was greeted by Cathy Seguin, Vice-President, SickKids International.

On her tour, Ms. Schadt was joined by Mrs. Kerstin Radomski, member of German Parliament, Dr. Eleonore Wnendt-Juber, wife of the German ambassador to Canada, Mrs. Jutta Stechel, wife of the German General Consul to Toronto, Canada and Mr. Dennis Molinari, a member of the official delegation. The delegation had the opportunity to visit the interactive lounge of the Cancer & Stem Cell Biology neighbourhood where they were greeted by Drs. David Malkin, Oncologist and Senior Scientist, Isaac Odame, Haematologist and Member of the Centre for Global Child Health and Dr. Marc Remke, a post-doctoral fellow from Germany. The group learned that these large multi-level open spaces were designed to increase collaboration and spark innovation. Remke’s wife, Katharina, and their five-month old daughter Anna, also had the opportunity to greet the delegation.

Drs. Malkin, Odame and Remke led the group through one of the Gilgan Centre’s state-of-the-art laboratories where they discussed the importance of cancer research and the impacts it has on child health outcomes in Canada and around the world. 

President Joachim Gauck and Ms. Schadt were in Canada on a state visit from Sept. 24 to 27, stopping in Toronto, Québec and Ottawa. A journalist by profession, Ms. Schadt is now a patron of Müttergenesungswerk, the largest association in Germany of providers of parent-child treatments, Unicef ​​and the Children and Youth Foundation.
