SickKids supports continued efforts to save the lives of children and mothers

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) applauds recent announcements that support maternal, newborn and child health, says Dr. Stanley Zlotkin, Chief at the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health.

On Sept. 25 Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), was host at an event where the World Bank and the governments of Canada, Norway and the United States announced monetary commitments to a new Global Financing Facility (GFF) for maternal, newborn and child health around the world. Prime Minister Harper announced a $200-million commitment to the GFF on behalf of Canada.

SickKids was in the audience as a roster of global leaders, policymakers and health experts discussed the importance of maintaining the momentum of the Millennium Development Goals, adopted by world leaders in 2000.

"SickKids supports the UN’s Every Woman Every Child global strategy," says Zlotkin. “The GFF is an encouraging initiative that will be critical in helping to reach the most vulnerable children in resource-poor settings."

“Canada’s continued support of efforts aimed at saving the lives of children and mothers is truly appreciated at the Centre for Global Child Health as we continue to pursue the SickKids vision of Healthier Children. A Better World. Canada’s commitment, along with those of the US and Norway, will help to launch the GFF and could leverage further support from other donors.”

The speakers at the UN discussed how the GFF will support countries in the transition towards sustainable domestic financing of women’s and children’s health, improve coordination of the global health architecture, and fund systems needed to achieve sustainable health. They also explored how maternal, newborn and child health will feature in the Sustainable Development Goals that are currently being developed by global policy leaders and will be launched in 2015.
