Patients had an eggsellent time with Canadian Olympic athletes who dropped by the SickKids Bunny Hop Hunt on April 16. To celebrate Easter and Passover, the Olympians joined patients in decorating eggs and making delicious chocolate matzah crunch. Olympic mascot Komak also played air hockey with several of the children.

“Meeting the Olympians, getting to wear Olympic medals and just hanging out with them has been a really cool experience,” said 12-year-old Aaron, a SickKids outpatient. While he may never become an athlete, “unless they add laziness as a sport,” Aaron enjoyed taking selfies while wearing the medals and getting to know more about the athletes.

The children also took part in a Bunny Hop scavenger hunt. Stations were set up around the hospital, in locations like the Daniels Hollywood Theatre, the Family Centre and the Atrium. At each station, there was an activity led by one of the Olympians. When patients successfully completed their task, they were given the next clue.

“Coming to SickKids and adding fun to patients’ days is so rewarding,” says Olympian Brian Price, Beijing 2008 gold and London 2012 silver medalist in rowing. Price knows exactly what the patients are going through, as he spent time at SickKids when he was seven years old and diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “I attended events just like these when I was an inpatient at SickKids. They were always so much fun and made my stay in the hospital easier. I just want to give back any way I can.”

SickKids puts on the Bunny Hop Hunt every year, however this year the Olympians were added as a special extra touch. While children are in the hospital, Child Life events and activities allow them to celebrate holidays and give them something fun they can tell their friends and families about.
