SickKids statement: Enterovirus D68

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has received enterovirus D68 test results for two out of the three patients we told you about on Friday. One child has tested positive for EV-D68. The other tested negative for EV-D68, but positive for rhinovirus, the common cold virus.

We have been able to identify additional patients who are experiencing muscle weakness, most of whom had preceding respiratory illness. This brings the total number of patients with muscle weakness to six.

Of these six, we are awaiting EV-D68 test results for two children. Another two have tested negative for enterovirus.

To summarize, we have had six children with muscle weakness:

  • Two children have tested negative for enterovirus
  • One child has tested positive for EV-D68
  • One child has tested positive for rhinovirus (negative for EV-D68)
  • Two children are awaiting EV-D68 test results

Overall, SickKids has had seven confirmed cases of EV-D68, of which one child also experienced muscle weakness.

On the respiratory side, many of the children have been treated and discharged. As for the children with muscle weakness, it is still early on in their treatment, but we are seeing some improvement in some patients.
