Novel coronavirus: What patients and families need to know

SickKids is closely monitoring the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation that emerged from Wuhan, China. At this time, the Ontario Ministry of Health states that the risk to Ontarians is low. SickKids is taking precautions to keep you and your child safe while you are at the hospital.

What measures are in place at SickKids?

We are currently screening patients at entry points to the hospital such as the Emergency Department, clinics and patient transfers, for signs of illness. Patients who meet screening criteria will be placed in isolation precautions and viral testing will be done. We also continue to screen and take appropriate precautions for other respiratory viruses like influenza that are prevalent in our community.

Please do not visit friends or family who are in the hospital if you feel ill or have any symptoms of respiratory illness.

What do I need to know before coming to the Emergency Department?

Please visit Coming to Emergency to learn more about what to expect in our Emergency Department. It is important to immediately let the person registering your child know about any recent travel to China, whether they have been in contact with an ill person who travelled to China or been in contact with a person with a known case of novel coronavirus.

What do I need to know before coming to a clinic appointment?

If your child has a clinic appointment, test or other procedure scheduled, and has any respiratory symptoms, please call their clinic before the appointment to ask if they should still come to the hospital. It is important to immediately let the person registering your child know about any recent travel to China, whether they have been in contact with an ill person who travelled to China or been in contact with a person with a known case of novel coronavirus.

What are the symptoms?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms and have recently travelled internationally, please contact your clinic or health-care provider before coming to the hospital:

  • Fever
  • Respiratory symptoms or flu-like symptoms (i.e. cough, runny nose, sore throat)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Pneumonia
