Qatar Update: Project Overview and Staff Experience

In 2010, SickKids began a historic five-year partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation to create a state-of-the-art children’s hospital in Doha, Qatar.

A year and a half into the project, SickKids can look back at some amazing milestones in the development of Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) new children’s hospital in Doha, Qatar.

“The Qatar project continues to be an incredible experience for the SickKids staff who are able to share their expertise in paediatric care,” says Cathy Séguin, SickKids’ Vice-President, International Affairs.

Working with its partners in Qatar to ensure international best practices in paediatric care, SickKids is providing expertise in the areas of paediatric medicine, surgical services, interprofessional practice and education, family-centred care and research.

SickKids has drawn on the diverse experience of its health-care professionals to support the Qatar project, and the feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive.

Monping Chiang is a Paediatric Nurse Practitioner in General Surgery who went to Qatar in the project’s first year to work on the development of a paediatric surgery subspecialty nursing education program for HMC. “I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to share my clinical expertise and also learn about another culture and their health care system, “ she said. “Meeting the Qatar medical teams provided me with insights on their needs and also provided me with a greater awareness of how to interact with others at home in Toronto.”
