Qatar update: Project milestone

In 2010, SickKids began a historic five-year partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) to create a state-of-the-art children’s hospital in Doha, Qatar. Read about the project and the SickKids staff experience.

A major project milestone occurred in February 2011, when 12 chronically ventilated patients were relocated from Hamad General Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to Al Maha, a new paediatric rehabilitation unit in Rumailah Hospital. SickKids worked with Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital to create the children’s new home and facilitate the move to the Al Maha Unit.

The new unit offers more activities for daily living and is designed to support a variety of innovative, therapeutic programs not previously available in their acute hospital setting. Since February, one of the 12 patients has been transitioned home and another is now attending school, achievements which would have been impossible to accomplish in the previous space.

The positive impact the Al Maha Unit is having on patient lives is gaining attention locally and nationally in Qatar, as well as in Canada. The opening of the Al Maha Unit opening was attended by Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, the Hon. Sandra Pupatello.

In October 2011, this initiative was recognized with the “Guiding Star of Excellence” – the highest honour in HMC’s Staff and Program recognition program, which highlights and recognizes the contribution and achievements of individual teams who have worked towards implementing performance improvements within the organization.

The move had the additional benefit of opening 12 PICU patient beds.
