About Performance at SickKids

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is dedicated to improving health outcomes for children and their families in a compassionate and innovative, responsible and efficient manner.

Caring for children is at the heart of everything we do. As a world leader in children’s health care, we embrace the transparency and accountability that comes with leadership.

We are proud to be part of a system in Ontario that is focused on quality, accountability, transparency and results. The creation of Local Health Integration Networks is furthering collaboration and enhancing the efficiency of our system for the patients and families we serve.

SickKids appreciates that resources are finite and that our programs and services must be well organized and effective. Our commitment to operational excellence is a top priority and we strive to maintain the highest levels of quality in all elements of our strategic plan.

Our primary accountability is to our patients and their families and to those who fund our many programs and services. We value their trust. Indeed, as a publicly funded organization, SickKids has a responsibility to demonstrate that we are effectively managing our resources to provide the best in care, education and research.

SickKids’ performance measurement tool, the Balanced Scorecard, helps guide planning and enhance evidence-based decision making. Our new Corporate Strategy and Performance portfolio and our Decision Support department demonstrate our commitment to deliver excellence by setting standards, monitoring performance, and sharing results and outcomes with the public. We are publishing these results on our website and giving an update on our efforts in next year’s annual report.

At SickKids, we are galvanized by our mission, and uphold our values, professional standards and ethical practices in a fiscally responsible manner. Accountability and transparency not only make good moral sense; they also make good business sense, as motivators and catalysts to maintain and enhance our reputation as a pre-eminent children’s hospital, dedicated to Healthier Children. A Better World.™

“People are no longer prepared to simply sit on the sidelines and entrust the health system to governments and providers. They want to be involved, engaged and acknowledged, and well informed as owners, funders, and essential participants in the health care system.” Roy Romanow, Building on Values: The future of Health Care in Canada
