Young Families Program
This program is a health care service for adolescent parents (under 18) and their children. Teens can be referred at any stage of a pregnancy or after delivery. Services include comprehensive well baby care, management of acute, chronic, nutrition and feeding problems, parenting education, psychosocial support and co-ordination of care in the hospital and in the community. Birth control, sexual health care and counseling are available for the parents. The program will follow the family until the child/children are 2-3 years of age.
Referral guidelines include:
- Parents age 12-18 years of age
- Child Protection involvement
- History of trauma
- Mental health issues
- Medically complicated
- Transient living situation
- Psycho-socially complex
This program is affiliated with the Young Parents Program (based in the Gynecology Clinic), a prenatal program providing adolescent-geared education and prenatal care. The Young Families' Program and Young Parents Program work closely with families along the continuum from pregnancy to parenting.
