Telephone Referrals

For Urgent referrals to be seen within 24 hours.  You may still be requested to submit an electronic referral after the original telephone consultation.

Step 1
Referring professional identifies need for expert advice

Step 2
Referring professional telephones reaching either the main switchboard: (416) 813-1500 or the clinic/service area needed. In each case the referring professional will be directed to a SickKids professional who will assess the urgency and specific needs of the caller.

Step 3
SickKids clinician will either:

  • direct urgent cases to the appropriate healthcare intervention
  • give telephone advice only
  • advise caller to submit the online form

Step 4
The referring professional contacts ARMs Administration to discuss options to fax referral.  A NEW Fax Referral form is provided by ARMs Administration and the referring professional faxes or mails referral directly to clinic/service.

Step 5
Referring professional completes the form and returns it to the appropriate clinic/service area.

Step 6
Designated SickKids professional clinically triages and screens the referral. The referral is redirected if inappropriate.

Step 7 
Clinic/service area informs family and/or referring professional of referral status (appointment time or redirection) within five business days.

Step 8
Clinic/service area provides family and/or patient with appropriate information and/or instructions for appointment (via mail or telephone).
