About Mental Health

The facts:

  • Only one in five children who need mental health services receives them in Canada
  • 70 per cent of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence
  • It is more common for those aged 15 to 24 to experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders than any other age group
  • After accidents, suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10 to 19
  • Suicide accounts for 11 per cent of deaths among youth aged 10 to 14 and 23 per cent of deaths among youth aged 15 to 19
  • Mental illnesses account for more than 15 per cent of the burden of disease in Canada, these illnesses receive less than six per cent of health care dollars
  • About one in five individuals will experience a mental illness in their lifetime
  • About half of mental disorders begin before the age of 16
