Social Work Education Program
The Department of Social Work at SickKids makes a unique contribution to the care of children and families through its long tradition of educating and training social work students interested in paediatric health care.
The department offers a vibrant student program in which department social workers offer practicum placements throughout the hospital to graduate students from the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto, as well as to students from a limited number of other graduate social work programs.
As part of the practicum experience, we also offer weekly student seminars on issues related to social work and paediatric hospital practice. Students also have an opportunity to participate in a family therapy training program.
The student program accepts MSW students only. Student placements are available in clinical, research and administrative settings. All requests for field placements must be processed through respective universities. Direct requests from students will not be processed.
In the past year, staff from the Social Work department developed and delivered an MSW elective course, for the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, the University of Toronto held on site at SickKids. The course, Social Work Practice in Pediatric Health Care links social work and health theory, evidence-informed interventions and practitioner designed social work practice. The course is offered in the Spring/Summer term.
