Dr. James Rutka is a neurosurgeon and senior scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children. With the help of several families, Dr Rutka started the b.r.a.i.n.child organization in June 1993 after recognizing a need for support when parents were faced with the life altering sentence "your child has a brain tumour."
b.r.a.i.n.child began as a grassroots group of patients, families and caregivers that focused on three aspects of paediatric brain tumours:
- Helping each other through shared education and experiences.
- Educating the community about the importance of early detection and the special needs of children with brain tumours.
- Fundraising for research into the causes of brain tumours and development of new nontoxic treatments.
Over the last twenty years the faces of b.r.a.i.n.child have changed but Dr. Rutka has been at the core of this group. If you would like to know more about Dr. Rutka, view his profile.
