Ontario Genetics Secretariat

The Ontario Genetics Secretariat was created to strategically plan an integrated approach to genetic services for Ontario. Through SickKids leadership and planning sponsorship, consensus has been reached from all 10 of Ontario’s regional genetics centres and northern regional genetics programs on planning priorities to begin the task of building a provincial strategy together.

In early March 2009, the Ontario Genetics Secretariat released a white paper entitled Genetic Testing, Services and Research: Contributing to the Future Healthcare of Ontarians. The paper was released to inform senior hospital leaders, LHINs and government on issues, pressures and salient points pertaining to lab and clinical genetic activities in Ontario, and identify areas of focus for discussion with the LHINs and governments.

The release of this paper also complements other activities supporting the development of a provincial strategy for genetics, specifically the Cancer Care Ontario recommendations for Molecular Oncology Genetics Laboratory Testing released in February 2009.

Building on both these recent releases, Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care subsequently collaborated with the Secretariat to complete an Ontario Genetic Services (Strategy) Framework: How Ontario can respond to the growing demand for Genetic Services completed in January 2011. This framework suggests seven core recommendations to collectively plan the future of genetic services for Ontarians. At this time, all recommendations are restricted from public release.
