About the course

At our last event, SickKids was pleased to present a hands-on congenital heart disease surgery course for cardiovascular surgeons.

The pre-registered attendees had the opportunity to perform surgical procedures on their own 3D print models. These cases included tetralogy of Fallot, complete transposition of the great arteries with intact ventricular septum, two different forms of double outlet right ventricle and hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

The hands-on sessions for each case were preceded by didactic lectures on surgical anatomy, as well as discussions on the techniques.  Attendees were divided into groups and had the opportunity to perform the procedures as primary operator and assistant. The established cardiovascular surgeons were available for advice and demonstration of the procedures throughout the course. Each attendee was provided with the models, surgical patches, needles and threads.
