Training and Education
The Centre for Image-Guided Care (CIGC) is comprised of an interprofessional team responsible for developing the strategic directions and shared vision of the Centre, establishing and implementing clinical, research and education goals in addition to overall Centre operations. The Education Committee was created with the specific intention of advancing education in image guided care by developing joint educational opportunities for physicians, nurses, technologists and other health professionals involved in image guidance.
The CIGC Education Committee, chaired by Dr. Dimitri Parra, brings together an interprofessional group possessing expertise in their fields and a passion for providing ongoing education to working health professionals involved in paediatric care. Through a variety of courses and workshops that will be created collaboratively by the committee, the CIGC Education Committee will offer SickKids staff and trainees not only a chance to deepen their understanding of image guided care but also the opportunity to innovate by bringing together classes of interdisciplinary participants.
Initiatives: First Pilot Course Successfully Launched!
On January 28, 2014 the CIGC Education Committee launched the first in a series of workshops designed for SickKids staff and trainees seeking skills in ultrasound guided vascular access. This pilot workshop, Basic Ultrasound Principles Applied to Vascular Access, was offered to a select group of interprofessional and interdepartmental staff at the Learning Institute and marks the beginning of exciting educational initiatives that will be offered through the CIGC.
This half day workshop is designed to teach basic principles of ultrasound and ultrasound guided venous access applied to the insertion of central venous catheters. The workshop features a pre-workshop e-learning module which will assess participants’ prior knowledge and skill set and will also feature didactic lectures regarding the basics of ultrasound, vascular access devices, and technique of ultrasounds-guided vascular access. After the lectures, participants use our state of the art training facility to complete simulation based training, giving participants the confidence to practice after completing the workshop.
