We are very proud of the clinical and ancillary services we provide and hope the information contained within these pages is helpful. Our primary aim is to deliver the highest quality and safest care possible within our Divisions of Paediatric Intensive Care and Cardiac Critical Care, and in doing so gain the trust of all of our patients and families. Over 2000 newborns, infants, children and adolescents are admitted to the Critical Care Unit each year.
In 2015 the leadership team and staff in the Department of Critical Care came together to redefine our vision statement. We wanted a statement that reflected the care we provide, a statement that we could all live by – “Aspiring to excellence in critical care…whatever it takes”. Read more about our vision.
Patients come to us with the entire spectrum of critical care problems and we provide all of the resources necessary to manage critical illness, including all modes of mechanical ventilation, mechanical support of the circulation and support of organ systems. In addition to clinical excellence, we are proud of our achievements over many years in training the next generation of clinicians in Canada as well as worldwide. There are wonderful opportunities here and we encourage you to look at the options for training and please feel free to contact us directly.
The outcome for patients managed in our Critical Care Unit is exceptional. The dedication and skills of all clinicians are first class. We strive to review and improve our clinical practices continuously so that we can be innovative, develop new treatment paradigms and optimize efficient resource utilization. Innovation comes from our dedicated research program, with an important focus on areas related to traumatic brain injury, resuscitation and early warning systems, mechanical support of the circulation, the impact of mechanical ventilation and management of newborns and infants following congenital heart surgery.
Our success over many years is directly related to the dedication of our staff. They are wonderful people, as well as skillful and compassionate clinicians who make a difference every day in the lives of the patients we care for. You will meet many of them as you scroll through the pages of the Department of Critical Care Medicine. We welcome your feedback and contact.
