OVERVIEW

The integrated specialist dental care provided by the Department of Dentistry cannot be provided in the community. The department provides a full range of modern dental specialty services as well as innovative treatment in both the ambulatory and operating room settings to children and adolescents less than 18 years whose treatment is best managed in a multidisciplinary hospital environment.

Dentistry sees approximately 16,000 patient clinic visits annually, with the vast majority having a medical comorbidity. The small number of children treated without a comorbidity are those children with severe early childhood caries, referred before their third birthday, who require extensive dental treatment for which general anesthesia is indicated. Close to 1,200 dental patients are treated in the OR as well as approximately 400 after-hours emergency patients treated in the Emergency Department, annually.
