Endocrinology

The Division of Endocrinology/Endocrine Program provides both inpatient and ambulatory care to infants, children and teens with the full spectrum of endocrine disorders. The Division of Endocrinology is under the umbrella of the Department of Paediatrics. In addition, Paediatric Gynecology is a subsection of this program. This program is the tertiary referral centre for a large portion of Ontario and supports endocrine complications associated with many other disciplines. This service is very active in health professional education and research.

We have a large multidisciplinary diabetes health-care team involved in the ongoing care of over 1,000 children with Types 1 and 2 diabetes as well as diabetes related to other disorders (e.g. cystic fibrosis, glucocorticoid therapy). More than 100 children are seen each year. We have a large insulin pump program.

The Division is very active in many research endeavors in both diabetes and endocrinology and the division has a Subspecialty Fellowship Training Program that is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

For health-care professionals

This section is designed to assist Health Care Professionals in managing newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes mellitus, and in managing its complications.

Referring a Patient

SickKids uses an online referral system to support more timely and efficient management of referral from health-care professionals to the outpatient clinics. This system is beneficial to the referring physician, to the child and their family and to our hospital.
