Leukemia/Lymphoma Section

The Leukemia Lymphoma Section is an effective interprofessional healthcare team that is dedicated to providing children, adolescents and young adults with blood cell cancers (leukemia), immune cell cancers (lymphoma) and histiocytic disorders with the best available diagnostic service and treatment. Leukemia and lymphoma are the most frequent forms of childhood cancer. Our program ranks among the largest in North America. We, therefore, have extensive expertise with the diagnosis and treatment of common and rare forms of childhood leukemia, lymphoma and histiocytic disorders. Our interprofessional team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, contact nurses, social workers, neuropsychologists, pharmacists, dieticians and child life specialists. Members have leadership roles in international research organizations and are committed to increasing treatment success and knowledge through clinical, laboratory-based and translational research.

Neuro-Oncology Section

The Neuro-Oncology Team is comprised of an accomplished group of internationally renowned leaders in the field of paediatric neuro-oncology who are committed to providing outstanding care to children diagnosed with brain tumours and their families. This diverse interdisciplinary team provides quality care to hundreds of paediatric brain tumour patients each year from both within Canada and abroad. Our team includes staff physicians, fellows, NPs, RNs, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, dieticians, speech therapists, and others.  Staff physician team members include Dr. Eric Bouffet (Section Head), Dr. Ute Bartels, Dr. Annie Huang, Dr. Vijay Ramaswamy and Dr. Uri Tabori. In addition to providing high quality clinical care to patients, our staff physician team members also manage active laboratories here at SickKids; conduct ground-breaking research; develop/lead numerous clinical trials; and hold leadership roles on various National and International paediatric oncology groups and committees.

Solid Tumor Section

The solid tumour team is a multi-disciplinary group of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and allied health professionals dedicated to the delivery of outstanding care to patients with solid malignancies. Our program is unique in Canada and one of very few teams in North America that is specifically focused on solid tumours. Our team includes clinicians with expertise and international leadership roles in clinical trials and clinical and laboratory research for solid tumours including neuroblastoma, sarcomas, renal tumours and retinoblastoma.

Bone Marrow Transplantation Section

The Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT) section is the designated pediatric transplant centre for the province of Ontario and the Maritimes, and is subsequently responsible for transplanting some 45% of the children in need of SCT in Canada.  The program is Foundation of Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) accredited.  The physician team members include Dr. Donna Wall (Section Head), Dr. Tal Schechter-Finkelstein, Dr. Joerg Krueger, Dr. Muhammad Ali, and Dr. KY Chiang. Besides providing the best medical care to all patients who require a stem cell transplant to overcome their disease, the section also provides leadership at national and international levels.  In addition, the members of the team are involved in many research studies relating to pediatric transplantation.  In 2013, the program also started translational research in the new Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning, focusing on Graft-versus-Host Disease and Cell Therapy.

Haematology Section

The diverse inter-professional team in this Section delivers high quality clinical, research-intensive and internationally recognized programs for children and adolescents with a broad spectrum of haematological disorders, including general haematology, haemoglobinopathy, haemostasis-thrombosis and marrow failure/myelodysplasia.
