Neurointerventionalist

The paediatric interventional neuroradiologists in IGT perform vascular and non-vascular neurointerventional procedures.  A number of cerebral angiographic studies are performed for a wide range of neurosurgical and neurological indications, including Wada testing and intra-operative angiography. Neurointerventional treatment is performed for intracranial vasospasm and acute paediatric stroke, pre-operative tumour embolizations as well as treatment of acquired head and neck vascular malformations.  In addition, they perform CT myelography, including in neonates for brachial plexus injury, as well as ultrasound/fluoroscopy-assisted lumbar punctures and lumbar drain placement. Para-vertebral, spinal and intervertebral disk biopsies are performed under CT and fluoroscopic guidance.

Given the rarity of some of the intracranial lesions (e.g. vein of Galen Malformations, intracranial AVMs, and aneurysms), there are special arrangements with the neurointerventional teams at Toronto Western Hospital and St. Michaels Hospital. Their neurointerventional team has special expertise and experience in treating vein of Galen malformations. The adult neurointerventionalists have privileges at SickKids, and attend for complex or challenging intracranial and spinal embolizations. Neurointerventional cases are performed at SickKids in a dedicated state of the art biplane angiography system, with facilities for advanced guidance software, dyna/micro CT and fusion with diagnostic brain MRI and CT studies.
