Paediatricians

The function of the paediatrician within IGT is to extend patient care beyond the procedure room and provide medical expertise beyond the scope of the interventional radiologists. This is done by assessing patients in the wards before and after the procedures, as well as supervising post procedural care. The paediatrician in IGT is a hospitalist (a paediatrician specializing in acute inpatient paediatric care). There is one hospitalist working with the IGT team. Having a paediatrician as part of the IGT team is unique to SickKids, and ensures medical expertise, clinical back-up, and broader patient care. Examples of their role include active involvement in the assessment of children pre- gastrostomy Tube insertion, and provision of expertise in the management of empyema. They adopt the responsible physician role for overseeing patients referred to IGT from other institutions for day case procedures. Thus, this role enables more longitudinal patient care and provides thorough follow-ups in the wards daily.
