The Baby Friendly Initiative - Recognition of Best Practice

The presentation will give a brief outline and history of the Baby-Friendly Initiative, including the assessment process and explain the role of the Ontario Breastfeeding Committee in this process. Recognition of the BFI as best practice for infants and mothers and the benefits of baby-friendly practices on maternal and infant physical and mental health will be discussed. The presentation will conclude with some practice examples of policy and education two of the key elements facilities need to address in the implementation process.

Learning objectives:
1. Participants will gain an understanding of the Initiative explain the role of the Ontario Breastfeeding Committee in the designation process.

2. Participants will be able to list physical and mental health benefits for infants through the Baby-Friendly Initiative.

3. Participants will be able to recognize baby-friendly policies and know where to access baby-friendly education and other resources.
