Mothercraft’s Breaking the Cycle (BTC) program is a comprehensive and integrated mother-child early intervention program designed to reduce the risk and enhance the development of substance-exposed children by addressing maternal substance use issues and promoting a positive mother-child relationship. This presentation will include the results from recent research studies conducted at BTC with children who were exposed to alcohol prenatally and who were assessed using the Diagnostic Classification of Mental health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood: Revised Edition (DC:0-3R). The role of pre- and postnatal risk, maternal perceptions of parenting stress, the quality of the parent-infant relationship, neurobehavioural domains related to FASD, and related clinical disorders will be identified and discussed.
Learning objectives:
1. Participants will increase their understanding of the mental health profiles of children exposed to alcohol prenatally.
2. Participants will increase their understanding of the impact of prenatal alcohol exposure on the behaviour, regulation, development, and attachment of infants and very young children.
3. Participants will increase their understanding of the necessity of integrated mother-child services as a component of assessment, diagnosis, and intervention.
