Description:
The Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt Laboratory (O.U.C.H Lab) at York University is run by Dr. Rebecca Pillai Riddell, an assistant professor and a registered clinical psychologist. The O.U.C.H. Lab focuses on understanding how caregivers and children interact within the context of pediatric pain. Our research examines both healthy infants in pediatricians' clinics across the GTA and extremely ill infants found in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units of major Toronto hospitals. The presentation aims to provide a background in the assessment and management of infant pain and to provide a context in which to understand infant pain (i.e., the caregiver). Current research will be presented on a sample of 75 mother-infant dyads during a routine immunization procedure. The role of maternal factors will be discussed as it applies to infant pain expression. Implications and future directions for this program of research will be discussed.

Educational objectives:

  1. Provide a framework to understand infants in pain due to routine medical procedures (e.g., immunizations) or diagnoses (e.g., extreme prematurity)
  2. Describe results of recent work exploring the role of maternal factors in infant pain.
  3. Discuss implications of research on care and treatment of infants in pain.
