Learning Disabilities Research Program

Learning Disabilities Research Program

Since 1979, the Learning Disabilities Research Program (LDRP) at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) has been collaborating with school boards across the Greater Toronto Area and Southwestern Ontario in order to offer remediation for children, adolescents, and adults who have significant reading problems. Our programs are offered as part of research evaluating the effectiveness of different remedial reading approaches. The programming and interventions are based on over 30 years of research on what constitutes effective instruction for students with reading disabilities and on current research in the area of reading. Our focus is on providing struggling readers with strategic reading tools and enabling them to become independent readers.

On this site you will find information about the research that we are currently conducting, our past studies and results, our research programs PHAST (Phonological and Strategy Training, PHAST Comprehension, PHAST PACES), our published programs, Empower™ Reading, as well as resources for parents, teachers, and other professionals who work with individuals who have a learning disability or who are struggling to learn to read.
