Note about Medical Records
Note that the Hospital Archives does not hold copies of medical records of patients. To obtain patient records, please contact the Health Records Department.

Hours and Access

The Hospital Archives is open by appointment only, Monday to Friday.  Requested material will be brought up to the Hospital Library for access.

To make an appointment, or to make inquiries, please call 416-813-6396 or 416-813-7654, ext 206778.

Research Services

The Hospital Archives will provide reference service of up to 30 minutes, free of charge.

For more detailed research, Hospital Archives staff will conduct expert searches based on their knowledge of the records and electronic finding aids, at their discretion, for a fee.

Reproduction Fees

Reproduction costs vary.  The Hospital Archives staff will advise and provide cost estimates at the time of the request.

Photocopies can be made by Archives staff for a nominal charge.

Photographic reproductions or digital copies can be provided, if desired, at costs that will vary depending on the condition of the original material and the format of the reproduction.

If a copy negative must be created, or extensive digital correction must be applied, the researcher is responsible for the costs. The copy negative, however, will remain the property of the Hospital Archives.

Photocopies or photographic reproductions are understood to be solely for the purpose of research or private study. Any use for a purpose other than research or private study may require the authorization of the copyright owner of the work in question.

Upon request, the Hospital Archives will try to determine the copyright status of the material concerned and the name of the person or organization holding the copyright, if this information is known.  However, it is the responsibility of the researcher to comply with the provisions of the Copyright Act and its regulations.

When material is requested for publication or further reproduction, the Hospital Archives requires a disclosure statement of the intended use, and requests that a credit line be given to the Hospital Archives as the source of the material.

Special Requests

The Hospital for Sick Children recognizes a special relationship with the children who have passed through our halls and wards.

Former patients who have appeared in fundraising appeals or photographic stories about the Hospital can obtain photocopy reprints of articles or pictures without charge.

Please be aware that some photographs taken for these purposes may not have been retained by the Hospital after the initial period of use or sent to the Hospital Archives for collection. We will, however, try to accommodate the requests of former patients.

The Hospital Archives welcomes donations of objects, documents, photographs or personal stories about the history and concerns of the Hospital, its staff, and its related institutions.

Please call ahead (416-813-7654 ext. 206778) to ensure that someone will be available to receive your donation.
