Archives

The SickKids Archives was established in 1971. We collect, preserve and provide access to records relating to the history of the Hospital and its staff, with records dating back to our founding in 1875. Our holdings include minutes of official committees, internal documents, photographs, film/video, publications, newspaper and magazine clippings, personal recollections, and a small number of physical objects.

The Archives also holds records related to some related organizations, including the SickKids Foundation and the Alumnae Association of the SickKids School of Nursing.

What We Do

Our collection is used by academic researchers, journalists, former SickKids patients and families, relatives of former staff, members of the general public, and health professionals from around the world.

Please note: The SickKids Archives is in the process of relocating to a new facility. While we are continuing to accept new donations, we regret that we are unable to assist with reference requests or allow external researchers to access our collection at this time.

Visiting the Archives

People from outside SickKids can schedule a visit to view some of our records in person. We ask that you make an appointment before visiting, to ensure that the material you wish to view is available when you arrive. Please contact the Archives to ask about collection, or to make an appointment.

Ask the Archivist

If you have questions related to the history of SickKids, we are able to answer questions or provide access to some resources without a visit to our physical space. Please contact us if you have questions about SickKids facts, dates or anything else related to the history of SickKids.

Permission to use historical images

SickKids has an extensive collection of historical photographs. If you wish to use one of our images in a book, article, film, or to display it on your website, please contact us to apply for permission.

Media requests

The Hospital Archives helps with numerous media enquiries each year. We ask that journalists please start by contacting our Public Affairs department.

Donating materials to the Archives

The SickKids Archives regularly receives new material – both physical and digital. Some of our most useful and interesting records have been donated by former SickKids patients and families, relatives of former staff, or other outside donors. If you have items which you would like to donate, please contact us so that we can determine how best to coordinate this donation.
